Privacy and analytics
What this site and its course sites collect, why, and how to change your mind. It covers scottseidenberger.com, www.scottseidenberger.com and ilrhr5635.scottseidenberger.com.
Who is responsible
Scott T. Seidenberger, ILR School, Cornell University · Ithaca, NY 14853. Write to [email protected] about anything on this page.
Analytics
The sites measure their own use with first-party analytics, so that I can see which pages and parts of pages people read and improve them. There is no advertising, and nothing is shared with or sold to anyone. When analytics is on for your browser, it records:
- each page you open: its address without any query string, its title, and the name of the site that linked to it (not the full link), plus campaign tags such as utm_source;
- how the page is used: active time, how far you scroll, which parts of the page held the middle of the screen, links you follow, and where you click (the position within the element and its visible text);
- your device type, browser, operating system, language and window width;
- your approximate location (country, region, time zone) and network owner (for example, Cornell University), which Cloudflare derives from your IP address. The IP address itself is never stored.
What is never collected
Your name or email (unless you send them in a form, below), what you type, form contents, your IP address, or anything from other websites. Clicks inside forms record only their position and the element's visible label.
Consent
In the European Union, the rest of the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, nothing is recorded and no identifying cookie is set until you choose “Allow analytics” on the banner. Declining is one click and the site works the same either way. Your answer is remembered for six months on every site listed above, then the banner asks again.
Elsewhere, analytics is on by default and you can turn it off below. If your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, nothing is recorded anywhere, whatever you choose.
Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, the legal basis is your consent (Article 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw at any time, as easily as you gave it.
Cookies and browser storage
All of these belong to scottseidenberger.com. None is shared with a third party. The cookies are HttpOnly, so no script on the page can read them.
| Name | Kind | Purpose | Lasts | Set |
|---|---|---|---|---|
ss_consent | Cookie | Remembers your answer to the analytics banner | 6 months | Only once you answer |
ss_vid | Cookie | Recognises this browser across the sites, to count visitors | 13 months | Only with analytics on |
ss_sid | Cookie | Groups page views into one visit | 30 minutes after your last page view | Only with analytics on |
ss_profile | Local storage | Visit count and time per page, kept in your browser and never sent | Until you clear site data or decline | Only with analytics on |
ss_source | Session storage | Where this tab's visit came from | Until the tab closes | Only with analytics on |
ss_notrack | Local storage | Keeps analytics off in this browser after opening a page with ?notrack | Until a page is opened with ?track | Only if you use it |
Where it is kept, and for how long
Analytics data is stored in a Cloudflare D1 database in Cloudflare's eastern North America region. Cloudflare hosts the sites and processes the data on my behalf; nobody else has access. Page views, events, clicks and consent answers are kept until deleted, so that the sites can be compared over the years; there is no automatic time limit. Only aggregated figures are ever looked at. You can have your data deleted at any time (below).
Your choices and rights
You can allow or decline analytics here at any time, on any of the sites. “Delete my analytics data” removes everything recorded under this browser's cookie and turns analytics off. Use it before declining if you want past data gone: declining removes the cookie, and after that the data can no longer be tied to this browser (write to [email protected] instead).
You also have the right to ask what is held about you, to have it corrected or erased, and to object; write to [email protected]. In the EU, the EEA, the UK or Switzerland you may complain to your data protection authority.
The settings need JavaScript. Without it, nothing is recorded.
Things you send
The contact form emails your message to me; the site does not store it. Answers to a talk's audience question are stored with the talk and the time, plus an email address only if you choose to leave one. A request for a talk's slides or handout stores your email and note so I can approve it and send the link. These are kept until deleted; write to [email protected] to have yours removed.
